Swiss-GO-09: MUSA 3 Study

Improve ultrasound of the uterus and better understand common diseases.
Diseases of the uterine wall, such as adenomyosis and fibroids, are common benign conditions in women. They can cause pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, and infertility. These conditions primarily affect women of reproductive age. Historically, the diagnosis of such conditions was only made retrospectively, after the uterus had been removed and examined pathologically. This is not a satisfactory treatment option for many women. Today, modern ultrasound technology with improved image quality offers a way to diagnose signs of these conditions much earlier. This allows for earlier identification of possible treatment options.
The way fibroids and adenomyosis appear on ultrasound can vary greatly from woman to woman. The symptoms that women suffer from are also individually very different. Which findings lead to which symptoms and how these can be optimally treated without necessarily removing the uterus is the focus of the MUSA studies.
MUSA - Morphological Uterus Sonographic Assessment
The MUSA group is a group of international experts specializing in the systematic examination of the uterus using ultrasound. They have published guidelines and recommendations for this purpose. There are several international MUSA studies, in which many centers worldwide participate. The University Hospital Basel participates in several studies and is the main responsible center for the MUSA 3 study: Association of ultrasound features of the myometrium suggestive of adenomyosis and clinical symptoms.
In the MUSA 3 study, ultrasound examinations and questionnaires are used to investigate which symptoms are caused by adenomyosis. Women participating in the study are examined using transvaginal ultrasound and receive a questionnaire about their symptoms. The correlation between the symptoms and the ultrasound findings is analyzed.

By taking part in the study, a participant supports the research and enables that we learn more about this condition and better understand it. This will allow for better treatment options to be developed in the future.
